Day Surgery and Arthroscopy

Private Orthopedic Surgery in Stockholm – Day Surgery and Arthroscopy

Gentle surgery under local anesthesia when surgery is the right choice.

Not all orthopedic conditions require surgery – but when surgery is medically justified, it should be performed with the highest precision, safety, and care.

At Elit Ortopedi in Stockholm, we offer orthopedic procedures as day surgery under local anesthesia. This means you avoid general anesthesia, can go home the same day, and often experience a shorter and smoother recovery.

All surgical interventions are always preceded by a thorough specialist assessment. Here, we ensure that surgery is the correct path – or if biological treatment or rehabilitation is a better alternative.

Do you need a surgical assessment?

During a specialist assessment, we determine if surgery is necessary or if other treatment options would provide better results for you

Day Surgery under Local Anesthesia

We perform orthopedic operations as day surgery, which means that you:

  • Avoid general anesthesia
  • Can go home immediately after the procedure
  • Often recover faster in your home environment
  • Reduce the risk of postoperative complications

Day surgery under local anesthesia is a safe and gentle method suitable for many orthopedic procedures. Our surgeons are specialists in orthopedic surgery with extensive experience in day-surgical techniques.

Arthroscopy – Keyhole Surgery

Many joint conditions can be treated with arthroscopy (keyhole surgery). This method involves inserting a small camera and thin instruments into the joint through tiny incisions, resulting in minimal impact on the surrounding tissue.

We perform arthroscopic procedures in the:

  • Knee (e.g., meniscus injuries)
  • Shoulder (e.g., impingement)
  • Elbow
  • Foot & Ankle

This is how a surgery is performed

No two surgeries are exactly alike. It depends on the procedure itself, but also on the fact that every patient has a unique anatomy and medical history. However, this is a general overview of the process:

Preparations

The first thing that happens upon arrival at the surgical department is changing into surgical attire, including a cap and shoe covers. The preoperative nurse will take your blood pressure and pulse, and review the Health Declaration that all patients must complete prior to surgery. In most cases, the patient receives sedative medication and local anesthesia at this stage.

Inside the Operating Room

Once inside the operating room, you will lie down on a surgical table. The scrub nurse disinfects the surgical site and covers the area with sterile surgical drapes. The surgery then begins. The surgical team typically consists of a surgeon, a scrub nurse, and a circulating nurse (assistant). The circulating nurse helps prepare and open all sterile materials before and during the procedure.

During the Surgery

At Elit Ortopedi, we perform day surgery procedures under both local and general anesthesia. If the patient is awake, the surgeon and nurse will talk to the patient throughout the procedure and explain what is happening. At the end of the surgery, the wound is sutured and a dressing is applied to ensure proper healing.

After the Surgery

After the operation, you will rest for a while in our postoperative recovery ward, where coffee, tea, and a sandwich are served to those who wish. We do this to ensure that the patient feels well before heading home. The operating surgeon will always come out to discuss the procedure with the patient before discharge. At this time, the patient will receive any necessary prescriptions for medication and, if applicable, a medical certificate for sick leave.
